Our journey honors the original Cape Rebels, whose grit and luck paved the way for legends. In 1925, crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsaut created a bold new cultivar: Pinotage. Though its future was uncertain, visionary winemakers transformed Pinotage into South Africa’s iconic gem. Against all odds, they secured its place on the world stage.

This tale of Pinotage’s rise mirrors Orpheus & the Raven’s spirit of exploration, innovation, and defiance.

Lucky No7 was our daring gamble. Symbolizing the original seven vineyards, this was our all-or-nothing wager to take a bold stand against conformity.

The label brings this to life: Orpheus, gripping a Pinotage vine in one hand and an hourglass in the other, charges through swirling forces. Beside him, a skeletal figure nods to the past, while the Raven kneels, envisioning a bright future, urging the rebels never to surrender.

Our No.7 pays homage to the Cape Rebel winemakers, who have persevered in creating Pinotage wines of distinction – through adversity and waves of criticism, they prevailed to afford Pinotage its rightful place on the world stage.

WINEMAKER'S NOTES

An amalgamation of berries on the nose: blueberries, bursts of raspberry, cranberry, and mulberry. The vivid fruit profile is heightened by an attractive perfume of violet and lavender,infusing the wine with an undeniable elegance. A judicious use of oak contributes toasty wisps, almond nougat and dark chocolate shavings. “Blind belief in authority is the enemy of truth.” Albert Einstein

OENOLOGY

Grapes were sourced from the renowned sites of Simonsberg and Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, as well as the cooler slopes of Durbanville. All components were fermented separately, in a combination of stainless steel fermentors with pump overs, and open fermentors with punch-downs.

MATURATION

A 50:50 split of French and American barrels used, 50% new oak. 18 months total maturation.

FOOD SUGGESTIONS

Matches beautifully with slow-cooked leg of lamb and roast potatoes, or with your favourite cut of beef steak.

The original no.7 Pinotage originated from seven different vineyard sites – a tongue-in-cheek reference to the seven nations that make up Jack White’s army! The label artwork, which denotes Pinotage’s battle to ascend the world wine stage, finds its echo in the band’s struggle with the choirs of hecklers deriding their success.
